Chapter 156
Sylvie would give anything not to be here with Machai.
He picked her from home and drove them to the mansion where the party was being held.
“It’s a friend’s birthday,” he said, just as they stepped out of the car.
Oh, how informative–Sylvie thought mockingly.
He held her hand as they walked into the house together. The large living room was filled with more than twenty people, all laughing and holding wine glasses.
Their chatters died down as soon as Sylvie and Machai made their way in, most of them being surprised by the fact that Machai did come with a companion, and for those that knew Sylvie, they were surprised that his companion was Sylvie of all people.
Sylvie, however, was more shocked to find Kage Hawkins in the midst of the guests.
What!? She screamed in her head. Did Machai know he’d be present but brought her anyway?
“Hey, guys.” Machai titled his head at some of the guys on the couch.
For the next minute, they exchanged warm greetings and handshakes.
Sylvie forced her gaze to the floor, not wanting to lock eyes with Kage who was just by the dining. He was with Cindy who was wearing a frown now, locking her hand firmly around Kage’s
“A nice partner you have there, bro.” One of the inclined his head towards Sylvie who felt her stomach churn in an instant. “Do you need a drink?” One of them stood and grabbed a glass from a nearby tray.
“Thank you.“She smiled, taking it from him.
Her hand shook slightly as she lifted the glass to her lips. Kage was involved in a conversation with someone, but she could swear he was staring at her from time to time.
Putting his hand on the small of her back; Machai led her away from the couch, going toward the table where the celebrant
sat.
“Did you know Kage would be here?” Sylvie asked the first chance she got, keeping her tone as low as possible.
“The celebrant’s a close friend of ours. I knew there was a possibility.”
“You should’ve told me. I don’t find it cool that I have to be in the same room with him, Machai.”
“Why? Because you’re with me?”
Sylvie said nothing.
“We’re together now, Sylvie. You should get used to it.”
God, he was an asshole.
She forced a smile as they reached the celebrant who was in the company of some other guests. He and Machai exchanged friendly greetings, then he shook his hands with Sylvie.
“I’m so pleased to have you here, love. Tell me, how did you become friends
with this
douchebag?”

The few people at the table laughed. Machai chuckled.
“Actually, bro; Sylvie and I are not just friends. We’re engaged.”
Collective gasps went round the table, down coming from behind them. Sylvie’s jaw dropped to the floor, her eyes widening like they’d seen a ghost.
“Woah! You’re not serious, are you?” The celebrant exclaimed. “What the hell, man? How did you get so lucky!?”
Machai shrugged, sipping from his drink. “What can I say? Luck has always been on my side.” He tightened his hand around Sylvie’s waist.
Cold skittered down Sylvie’s back. What was wrong with him? The room was small enough for a lot of people to have heard what he said.
“Machai’s just joking.” She cut in, wearing a forced smile. “Yes, he’s actually proposed, but I’m still taking it into consideration and haven’t given him my response yet.”
She felt his hand go still around her waist. Well, to hell with him—she thought.
“Oh… Is that so?” One of the men at the table said with suspicious eyes. “Well, you two actually look good together, I guess.”
“Yeah. You should give it a good thought, Sylvie.” The celebrant said. Somehow, Sylvie could detect a warning in his words.
“Thanks.”
Happy birthday once more, Ty.” Machai nodded at him before leading Sylvie away.
As she turned, she caught sight of Kage by the dining. He spared her a glance as he sipped from his glass, returning his gaze to the guest he was dealing with.
No doubt, he’d overheard everything. The thought made me want to hide her head in shame.
“What was the meaning of that?” Machai asked in a low angry tone as he led her away from the table.
Sylvie grew nervous but tried as best as she could to hide it. “I should be the one asking. Why would you room full of people as your fiancee when you know that isn’t true?”

He stopped walking, turning to face her. They were in a corner of the room and out of earshot.
“So, what do you think we are, Sylvie?”
“I don’t know. But I’m still considering your proposal.”
He smiled, but only a dumb person would believe it was genuine
Holding her hand, he started leading her out of the living room.
“Where are we going?” Sylvie asked, a little panicked.
“I just need to talk to you. It’s a little noisy here.”
She thought of resisting, but there were too many eyes on them. The last thing she wanted was creating a scene at someone’s party.
So, she followed him down the hallway while praying it wasn’t what she was think:
He led her into a room. Okay….

“What’re we…” Before she could finish her question, he hit her hard in the stomach.
Sylvie groaned and stumbled back, holding onto the bed for support.
“You really don’t know what we are, do you?” He started shedding his belt. “Maybe this would help you understand.”
“What’re you doing!?” She tried to stand, but he pushed her back onto the bed. Her heart rate spiked. “We’re in someone’s apartment, Machai. Stop this madness.”
He didn’t say a word but kept his cold eyes on her. When he wrapped the end of the belt around his fist, his intentions became clear.
Sylvie tried to stand again, but he whipped her on her thigh, bringing her back onto the bed.
No. Not whips. He couldn’t do this to her.
“Stop it, Machai. Please.” A tremor ran through her voice.
“It’s up to you if we get caught or not, Sylvie. You could scream and alert the others if you want, it won’t change things between us. Instead, you’ll be the one going around, ashamed.” He struck her again with the belt.
Sylvie lifted her hand to her mouth to stifle the sound that wanted to escape.
Memories of her being tied up and whipped in the warehouse came flashing at her and suddenly, it felt like she was going to die.
She tried to fight against Machai, but he was too strong and pushed her down to the floor. There, he had more power over her and whipped her repeatedly–on her arms, thighs, back.
It was a miracle she wasn’t screaming down the house.
Finally, he stopped, but her tears didn’t.
“What you did today was an insult to my personality,” he said as he fixed his belt back on. “You make sure it doesn’t repeat itself, Sylvie. I won’t be this kind.”
He turned and walked out of the room, leaving Sylvie there on the floor and in tears.
