Chapter 77
Marcus
I was taking care of some documents in the office when the door knocked. I peered at the surveillance monitor on my desk and an immediate scowl came on my face. It was Andra standing outside the door with her hands waving at the camera.
1 relaxed in the leather swivel chair. “Come in.”
She opened the door and walked inside revealing the new hairstyle she had on. Hell, I wouldn’t have noticed it if it wasn’t such a blaring hair color.
“Mr. Hills,” she mouthed and a small smile followed. “I was hoping we could talk”
“About?”
I wasn’t even giving her the space to feel comfortable so I just motioned to the chair opposite the desk.
“I’d rather stand.”
I huffed because there was no way on earth I would try to convince her otherwise. “Suit yourself.” I swiveled ill I was facing my side and then closed a document so the sheets wouldn’t end up flying around. “So-” I started. “You said you wanted to talk to me?”
“Yes, Mr. Hills. Actually, I’m here concerning the conference coming up. I know I’m one of your oldest and reliable employees here at Hillstate and so it would only be decent to have me on the list.”
I frowned at the audacity of walking to my office to tell me this. “You should know better.”
Her flushed cheeks began having a wrinkle with disappointment “Mr. Hills,” she said. “Did I do something wrong?”
“That depends on your definition of wrong,” I responded knocking down the glass of whiskey beside me. I wasn’t going to have more than a glass, at least yet.
“Then what is going on?” she asked, her voice rising to a high pace. “You keep shutting me out no matter how hard I’ve tried to prove myself to you. You very well know that nobody does this better than me but you just keep ignoring me.”
I licked my lips to erase the taste of the whiskey from my lips and then I set the glass down. “Is this still about the conference?”
Because to me, it was more than that. It was something deeper and precious to her; like her sexual attraction to me and the idea of me rejecting her.
“This is not important and your nomination doesn’t count.”
“What do
you mean
it doesn’t count? You’re the boss and you are the one who can choose anyone to join you on this trip.” “That’s after the employees nominate and vote the person they won’t. You’ve been working here for quite a long time. Do you not remember the due process?”
Her eyes flushed and it diluted into anger. “You’re not going to ever pick me. Will you?”
Truth is, if it was left for me then I’d never pick her but it’s not really up to me despite being the Boss. I gave the rest employees the power to choose from themselves and I know for a fact that no one would actually choose her so that makes all of us.
I do not have an internal beef with her, I just think she does a little too much for someone who is
my employee.

Chapter 77
“Close the door behind you, I muttered in a dismissive tone and she didn’t wait any more seconds before turning to leave..
When she got to the door, she paused. “You’re favoring the others over me”
I stared in bewilderment. She wasn’t far from the truth but it wasn’t exactly the truth and so it felt like she was just accusing
- me.
“Use the door now,” I snapped and she staggered for a second. Her lips curled up as she walked out and slammed the door behind her.
She was becoming a thorn and one that I wouldn’t want In my butt for any reason. I stared back at my schedule for the day that Melissa dropped and saw the meeting with all employees was in a few minutes.
“Here we go again,” I scoffed and stood to my feet, adjusting my suit and wristwatch. I reached for the bottle and poured some whiskey into the glass for support. Downing the whiskey in one gulp, I dropped the glass but a knock followed and Nate shoved his head in.
“Excuse me, sir?”
I turned to him and tried to block out the first thought of him having Melissa.
“Yes, Mr. Bisley?”
“I think everyone has their vote ready.”
“I’ll be with you shortly,” I responded. He didn’t leave and I felt a surge. “Do I need to repeat myself?”
He shook his head and a furrow appeared on his forehead.
“Who do you think should be my second pick?” I asked him as a way of easing the uneasiness. I obviously snapped at him for no good reason.
If all employees were to vote, they’d vote for him. He’s easily the most preferred due to his flirty nature and maybe how funny he is although he has never made me laugh. Why the hell would he make me laugh even? I’m no girl with a skirt, there’s nothing to snoop around.
I wanted to see who he’d mention because I could bet on anything that he’d pick her.
I just needed him to say it to my face this time. He cleared his throat and just before he could get the chance to say something, my phone buzzed. “Leave what you have to say for the meeting,” I told him and he gave a nod.
He turned to the door and I raised my phone to see it was Paul.
“Hey, man?” I called as the call connected. “I do not have a free time tonight.”
He did not respond immediately. “Paul?”
“Marc,” he finally said and I could tell something was wrong. Paul never calls me Marc unless it’s to break a fucking bad
news.
“What the hell is happening?”
“It’s lan,” he stuttered. “He–he uh. Shit, Marc.”
I could sense it and so I took a moment to gather my thoughts. “Is he alive?”
