Chapter 60
Melissa
Right, he meant his house and even though I found that strange and weird as fuck, I didn’t contest it. He was right about my legs and being unable to walk properly.
I was lucky enough to get out of the office during break and at the point when there was barely any soul on their table, working.
I knew Nate would be shocked if he returned from God–knows–where and didn’t see me with a frown on my face trying to tidy my table. Yeah, even though I’ve fought him away all these months I still enjoy his presence whenever he’s waiting for me to finish up my work.
“This way.”
I gave a quick and awkward smile at the man as he led me through the door to the penthouse. The place was fucking big and the pictures of the rest of the Hills mansion on the internet did no justice to this one.
“Thanks,” I mumbled as I tried to walk like there was nothing wrong with me. I found myself looking at the elderly man wondering what on earth was going through his mind.
Did he think I was involved in an accident or did he actually think that it was Marcus who got me almost paralyzed? No, he shouldn’t think that. He’s an elderly man–somewhat between his fifties and sex shouldn’t be the first thing that came to his mind.
I swallowed hard, trying to fight back all the questions in my head. I looked back at him and he gave a nod.
A nod, for what? Wait, was he leaving me?
“Uh— sir.”
“Thomas,” he corrected. “Is there any problem?”
“Yes, sir. I mean Thomas.”
He raised an eyebrow and I shook my head because I was actually more confused than I was looking. “My bag isn’t here. Shit.”
“I’ll let Marcus know and I’ll have it brought to you.”
He just called him Marcus. Are they friends or? I shut the remaining thoughts welling in me and gave him a nod.
“Do you
idea how long I’ll be here?” I asked. “I mean, until Mr. Hills is back.” have any
He checked his wristwatch. “On a fair day, forty minutes at most
“And on an unfair day?”
“Depends on how unfair his schedule is. It could take about three more hours.”
“No fucking way I blurted not minding how it may have come out. He didn’t give me that death stare that most elderly people gave but I found my manners and muttered sorry.
“Thave to get back to the office in case Marcus needs me.”
A furrow appeared on my forehead. “Are you leaving me here??” I asked. “Alone???”

“You’re not alone,” he answered, trying to match the tone I used There are eight cameras in here and the house has a secure connection.”
“Oh my god. What am I supposed to do here when there’s no human being?”
“Talk to Siri, maybe,” he said turning slightly away from me. “Hey Siri, recognize Melissa’s voice.”
And in a split second, there was a response. “Got it! I’ll remember that voice from now on.”
Thomas gave me a small smile and then walked toward the door “See you soon.”
“Really? Siri?” I asked, not sure who I was referring to.
The blaring voice came next “Hello, Melissa. Nice to meet you. How can I assist you today?”
I should know better than to mention the damn word. I exhaled thinking of how best to spend the uncertain time I’ll be here before Marcus returns..
My eyes caught a portrait on the wall. It was a picture of Ian holding a ball and smiling so broad but beside him wasn’t Marcus. It was Paul.
A small smile crept on my lips as I walked toward the portrait. Doesn’t it feel good to have an uncle who can always be there for you too?
There was no other picture in that row and that made me wonder why Marcus didn’t have a picture of himself. Hell! That man is so sexy and he deserves to be on every billboard in NY.
“Siri,” I blurted. “Do you know how many women your boss brings home?”
“I’m sorry I do not have any personal information about my boss but I can help you with something else.”
I rolled my eyes. “Isn’t that because he has a bunch of them? I mean he fucks a lot of women right?”
“I’m sorry, I cannot continue this conversation in the way you’re taking. Let me know if I can help you with something else.”
I exhaled. “Okay, just play me a really nice romantic song. The most played and make it low, I don’t want something loud enough to get me deaf.”
“Noted. Is there something else you may want?”
“No, just the song.”
Well, they were right about Siri being smart and responsive because he was not only playing any random song, he was following my instruction. I have no idea what the title is but it’s sort of a popular song that was released in the 90s.
“Hey Siri, Can you also see to turning the lights to blue?”
“Of course I can!”
The blue light illuminated the room and I felt a surge of control. I moved my body gently to the rhythm while enjoying the lyrics of the song. Well, I had about forty minutes to three hours to figure out why Marcus brought me here and if I’d be getting a hint of his private life from his house.
“Cause when you love someone, you open your hearts…” I hummed the rest of the song cause I wasn’t so familiar v next line, but on and on I went until I heard the door creak.
“And what is going on here?” Marcus‘ voice blared from the door and I swallowed the lump in my throat. Fucking hell, Thomas said forty minutes to three hours. How come he was back already?
