Chapter 47

A few days have passed since that incident; the mind–blowing sex with Melissa. It’s not only been a recurrent thought in my head, it’s been a comforting experience.
I don’t know how to explain it but a bad day, crazy day, or even fruitless day becomes better when I think of how her claws dug deeper into my body.
This isn’t one of those days though; I’m more concerned about how the hell the company has experienced a financial setback in just a week.
Jimmy hasn’t had any meaningful explanation to give so I’ve called a meeting with the board of directors to have a word and hear what they have. I sure as hell hope we can assess the specific problem and develop a tailored plan to overcome it.
I’ve also contacted my lawyer and a private investigator to check in with all the Employees to see if there’s any foul play going on and investigate further.
My hands balled in an angry fist when the laptop pinged and a notification sprung on the screen. Just as I was staring right at the monitor and trying to figure out the mail that was sent, the door creaked open.
“Excuse me, sir.”
My eyes darted up gradually, recognizing the familiar toned legs. Her legs extended for miles, and her heels looked perfect. “Look who feels better and decided to come to work today.” My voice wasn’t friendly nor was it harsh. Somewhere in between but when she stepped forward, I fought the urge to say what I suddenly thought of.
“What is your excuse for unpunctuality?” I asked her scanning her face for any untold story.
She swallowed hard and I watched the line in her throat before they disappeared in a gulp. I also looked at her lips, waiting, to see if it would twitch.
I feel like I know her too well; her body language isn’t quite difficult to comprehend.
“I was trying to get this ready,” she said. My eyes fell to her hands as she lifted the brown envelope. She dropped it on the table and I picked it up.
My eyes zero in on the start of the paragraph.
Dearest Mr. Hills,
I hope this message finds you well. After careful consideration, I have made the decision to resign from my position at Hillstate. My last working day will be on the 10th day of this month, allowing for a two–week notice period as per company policy.
I want to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunities and experiences I have had during my time at Hillstate. It has been a pleasure working with such a talented and supportive team. I have learned and grown both personally and professionally, and I am grateful for the knowledge and skills I have acquired.
I will do my best to ensure a smooth transition of my responsibilities before my departure…
“What is this?” I asked trailing off the so–called letter of resignation. My lips roll together as my teeth grind down.
The letter was typed but in an unusual font which made me know it wasn’t typed in a very professional mood.
I looked at the document and then back at her. Her face holding so many emotions which I can easily pinpoint skepticism

“What is the meaning of this, Miss Kane?” My voice was calm, gentle, and demanding.
Her exhale stuttered. “I’m sorry, sir but I think it’s best I-”
“Resign?” I asked, my ears perking up and waiting for an answer. Did you get into a fight with any of the employees?”
She shook her head. She licked her bottom lip in a reflex action but that wasn’t the issue, how her eyes darted without the ability to look back into my eyes made me pause.
“Any issues with the management?”
Again, she shook her head. So why was she resigning?
“You do not even have a good reason for resigning,” I finally said pacing through the letter with my eyes. It looked like something written in the heat of the moment because Melissa I know, definitely writes better than this.
Her throat worked a swallow. “I do not intend to have a change of heart if that’s what you’re thinking.”
I picked up my phone, grabbed the file, and tucked it inside the control. Turning on the monitor, I signed back into the account and checked for the mail I was glancing at before she walked in.
“Mr. Hills.”
“I’m listening,” I told her. “Jimmy is supposed to send you a list of documents. Has he done that?”
Pulling the chair back slightly, she frowned. “I just submitted my resignation letter.”
“And I tossed it away.”

Her eyes widened in disbelief. Did she think I was going to say yes, go ahead and resign?
“Look, Miss Kane. This is a workplace and not some theatre for movies.” I paused. “I am not some movie director who is paid to direct a movie.”
“And who says I’m acting in a movie?” She cocked an eyebrow and huffed in disbelief.
“Then explain what this is about,” I told her, looking into her eyes.
“Mr. Hills, I have come to the conclusion that I have to do this.”

“You don’t have to do anything,” I fired watching her flinch from the harshness of my voice. “…and if this is about the two nights we made love then you don’t have to worry about it because it’s never going to happen again.”
Her lips parted to say something but she fought against it.
I looked at Melissa. Her dark eyes are zeroed in on the hand that’s so obviously fighting to be freed from a fist and with a hard swallow, she nodded. “Right.”
We make eye contact and I have trouble reading her. Normally, she’s an open book, but at this moment she’s clouded. I see…shock mostly, but there’s also something deeper, something.darker.
Good. At least I’m getting something out of her, an emotion that should replace the urge to walk out of this company.
