Chapter 43
Marcus
I walked straight to Chloe’s table. I have been observing them for quite some time and I can tell that she’s closer to Chloe than anyone else.
Not like I’d have preferred it any other way. Jimmy is gay, he made it clear from day one and so he’s not interested in sleeping with my Melissa.
Andra is one bitch who could kill anyone for simply getting too close to me and Nate? He’s a damn player and I know with the way he looks at her, he has made moves on her already.
So yeah, Chloe is the perfect one for her, and I approve of that. I took a few steps toward her table but she seemed to be engrossed in trying to choose an outfit.
A small smile was tugged on her lips, like every bride–to–be would have. Maybe Kyra would have had one too if she hadn’t died too young. I promised I’d give her the biggest wedding when she says to me and-
“Mr. Hills!” Chloe said the moment she noticed I was standing there.
“Chloe.”
“Uh–Sir. Do you need anything? I’m sorry I didn’t see you earlier. I was kinda busy with uh-”
She closed her laptop but I already saw it. She was checking out wedding gowns and that’s pretty okay. Chloe was never getting a strike for that. In fact, the whole idea of giving strikes is just for Melissa.
“Never mind,” she blurted. “What can I do for you, sir?”
“Not much,” I responded ignoring everything else she said even though I actually wanted to comment on it. I just didn’t have all that strength in me when I knew I needed something else… Urgently.
“Miss Kane,” I responded. “She’s not at work yet.”
Chloe twitched her lips and gave a small nod like she was scared that I’d give her friend another strike.
I continued. “She didn’t call in sick either.”
“I tried calling her but she isn’t taking her calls. I just believe it’s one of her breakdowns but I’ll let you know the moment I hear a word from her.”
My heart squeezed. One of her breakdowns?
“That would be appreciated,” I said turning away.
What on earth could be making her have a meltdown?
I walked away but not to my office. I headed to the Tesla and even though Thomas was all set to drive me; I needed to be discreet.
“It’s fine, Tom. I be right back.”
“Are you sure about that, Marcus?”
I gave a small nod. Tom is one of the few persons whom I permitted to call me by my first name. Aside from the obvious age gap, he has always been here; long enough to tell a whole ass story about me with nothing but facts.

He’s been loyal. Not only as the chauffeur but as a friend.
“Very sure,” I told him and he handed the keys to me.
I slid into the car and stormed off. I needed to see Melissa, to hold her, and find out what was wrong.

The drive didn’t take long; thanks to a road free from traffic jams. When I was right in front of her apartment, a sudd realization flushed through me.

I rubbed my hand over my forehead, absolutely mortified as I sat in my Tesla. Staring at the entrance, I wondered if I’d be able to muster enough courage to walk up to those doors and go in.
I would have told myself I’m here to find out why she didn’t come to work but I can’t keep lying to myself. I’m as useless as anything when she’s not around and that certainly sucks.
I need to see her.
I contemplated using the stairs since it was seldomly used by the neighbors but I thought against it. Any more second spent not seeing her face may just have me hyperventilating.
I spotted the elevators and pressed the button for the third floor. When the doors closed, a nervous energy bounced in me as I rode to Melissa’s floor.
I knocked on her door and stood there, waiting for her to open up.
There was no response but when I leaned closer and placed my ear closer to the door, I could bet on my company’s net worth that I heard a sound.
I knocked again, this time louder.
“Go away.”
Wait what? She didn’t even know who it was but her voice sounded strained like she had been crying.
I knocked again. “It’s Marcus, open up the door.”
I have no idea how that sounded but I wasn’t about to refer to myself as Mr. Hills in such an informal situation.
It took a few seconds before the door creaked
open
and hell.
I bite the inside of my cheek to keep in the inappropriate sound that was going to escape.
Standing in the doorway, wearing a big T–shirt with her nipples erect, was Melissa. Her shirt hung longer to her thigh but not any longer. Her thighs and her toned legs were on full display, and she looked so comfortably hot that it was almost painful.
Her hair was not done. No makeup, no classy.clothes, just her in her most comfortable shirt and I just realized how good she looked in this too.
“Mr. Hills,” she managed to blurt. “What are you doing here?”
“I’m here to see you.”
She swallowed hard and then walked out of the doorway, closing her door.
What was that?
I looked at her, trying her best to act normal and hide her swollen eyes with her hair.
“I’ll come to the office, she said and I frowned.

“You don’t have to, We can talk here, right now.”
“But my house is messy,” she contested. “My house is in a mess, sir.”
“You also look a mess but I’m not complaining. I’m really not here to judge you, Miss Kane.”
Disbelief clouded her and it felt good to see that I already triggered some sort of irritation in her.
“So, will you let me in?”
