Chapter 23
Marcus
Anyone who saw Paul and I would think we shared everything in common.
Maybe because of how we have a similar pursuit in career, how we do virtually everything together including coming to the
same gym.
–
Trust me, this man is not anything near me. Sometimes I wonder how we even got close it would have seemed impossible for a teenage version of me to call this man my best friend.
“So what’s the next plan?”
I took my gloves off my hands after repeatedly throwing my fist at the punching bag, 43 times.
I was breathing fast and in need of breath but his directionless question caught me.
“What?”
“I probably should be more specific,” he muttered. “Which other went will you be bring your Secretary to? The family welcome party, maybe?”
“Fucking asshole,” I whispered under my breath and sits next to him on the bench.
I reach for water bottle by his side. “We’re in the middle of drills, and that’s what you’re asking me?”
I pick up the water bottle and squirt some water in my

mouth.
“Yes, unserious questions should fit into the time frame of never!
He chuckled lightly and I could tell from his expression that he had more to
say.
“Look, I know what you’re thinking but get off it.”
“Why so? You don’t seem to have a good reason, brother.”
“I do have good enough reasons. Besides, she requested to be present as my Personal assistant,” I said making sure I dragged the last part to his hearing.
“She looked too pretty to even be thought of

secretary.”
“My mom did not,” he said with a shocking look and then burst into laughter.
“It wasn’t funny man. Did everyone else think she was my girlfriend or something?”
“Maybe.”
“Hell no. I should have given her a tag saying secretary.”
He frowned. “Are you ashamed of her or something?”
“No. You are missing the point,” I told him. How was Paul not getting this?

“Fuck, dude. Come off it. Maybe j wasn’t clear enough the last time,” I said and exhaled audibly. “Melissa is Ian’s girlfriend. Like his romantic partner.”
The look on his face was what I lived for.
“Exactly! Now you see why it’s very weird when you keep acting like an asshole?” I scoffed. “I can’t even believe that I didn’t punch you in the face all these while.”
“Does anyone know?”
With the way he looked at me, I knew what he was talking about.
“I don’t want to discuss that here,” I blurted and he gave a nod.
“But did you consider to bring her as your secretary at least?”
“I haven’t thought about it,” I answered.
“You should. She could meet everyone and get to know her boyfriend’s father better.”
“Ewww. Why?”
“Cause that’s what sensible people do.”

“Mom will be there and trust me, she’ll keep asking but if she sees her around, pestered.”

I rolled my eyes at him because even though he was trying so hard to make it seem like he knew what he was saying, he didn’t have any idea what he was suggesting.
“You have no wife Paul or even a girlfriend. think you need your advice more than I do.”
He chuckled. “I’m kind of into Joliet. Remember her?”
“Yeah- I met her at the dinner. Have you talked to her yet?”
He looked at me like he was taken back. “Oh no man. Really?
”
I raised my brow at him. “Really what? You like something, won’t you go for it?”
“Maybe” he said as his eyes averted to the shadow walking toward us.
His eyes float to the low–cut crop top sweater she’s wearing. It shows off an abundance of cleavage while also offering a view of her toned stomach. Her black leggings sparkle, and she paired them with fluffy white leg warmers that matched her
sweater.
She dropped her gym bag on the bench and packed her hair in a long tail before squatting
“Or maybe not,” Paul finished and I shook my head.
He’s never been anything close to serious. Paul doesn’t even know what he wants and that’s why his taste in women keeps fluctuating.
“Shut up, flirt.”
Paul looked at me as if pleading to not say anything that would ruin his chances with the hot lady.

Do doubt, she was curvy, beautiful and sexy but I wasn’t moved.
I wasn’t like Paul who had no idea what he wanted in a woman. I’ve always known I want and it’s been the same pattern with all the women I’ve fucked in the past.
“Get your ass up and let’s head out.”
“No way,” he blurted. “Did you see her?”
“Yes. I did. She was right there standing and squatting.”
“Stop being a goddamn jerk. You know why I’m asking.”
I arched my brow and touched the bridge of my nose. “Paul, she looks good but can we run along?”
“I need to talk to her first. Just give me a moment and stop being a fucking hater.”
“Fucking flirt.”
“At least I don’t have a son who’s now an adult.”
I shut my eyes and fight back the laughter welling in my throat. Paul is a jerk and he knows it.
He’s 41, without a wife. A wife is far too extreme to even expect from him.
He has had no good relationship in the last and now? I’m pretty sure that lady would kiss his ass the moment she finds out the kind of creep he is.
“Meet me at the car man, you’d never get a woman.”
“And you’ll not get her too- she’s your son’s girlfriend.”
I frowned. Wait, does he think I want Melissa? I pondered on it for a second and shook
