Chapter 19
Melissa
I opened my mouth to say something but it didn’t come out.
“Unfortunately, he’s not your Boss, he continued. His eyes alight with humor and I can’t help but notice his dimples.
A young man in full white bespoke approached us and with a smile, he gestured. “Mr. Hills, this way sir.”
Marcus took the first step and I followed, right beside him.
We followed him through the big brown door and we walked into the hall, filled with a lot of people. Hell, I have never even seen this many people in my life. Well aside from graduation where the whole students throw their caps in the air at once.
The hall was elegantly ornated, with soft lighting that created a warm ambiance. The tables covered in crisp white tablecloths were adorned with fresh floral clothing and round tables were strategically organized throughout the auditorium to promote interaction and dialogue among attendees.
We kept walking until he had to pause to greet a group of people I swallowed hard and paused too because hell, that was what courtesy demanded right?
“It’s so good to see you. Marcus!” The woman smiled and it clicked that somehow, they knew themselves.
“I feel the same, Marcus told her when he pulled back after leaving a kiss on her cheek. “I’m sorry I haven’t made time to see
you
“Oh, poor kid! I wouldn’t blame you, would I? Even Paul barely makes any time out too.”
“That’ll change soon, I assure you.”
“Oh sweetie,” the woman said turning to look at me.
The ground should swallow me.
“You are?”
“Melissa,” I blurted. “Melissa Kane,”
“Melissa, she repeated and then turned to look at Marcus but his lips were held in a grim like he was trying to not give a certain impression.
“You never told me, ‘Marcus. You should have told me about her, son. She’s so beautiful.”
He frowned. “I guess so but Miss Kane here is my Secretary. Work duties and not what you are thinking Right Miss Kaner
I swallowed hard. “Yeah, yeah. Of course, Mr. Hills, It’s a pleasure to meet you, ma’am.”
The rest of them chuckled, possibly laughing at the older woman for mistaking me for Marcus’ girlfriend.
Did I look like a woman g good enough for a man like Marcus?
Probably not but why didn’t he mention that I am lan’s girlfriend?
Well, even though I’m no longer his girlfriend m****ally, I still have to keep to my act which makes me his girlfriend in everyone’s eyes.
That was Paul’s mom,” he said.

*Really?” Or maybe I wasn’t supposed to ask that because he didn’t respond to that.

I kept walking, wondering what Paul’s mom was doing here but a banner of Paul’s picture and his name made me realize why. Paul is the host and owner of the foundation.
Now I get it.
There were many round tables in the hall but name cards were placed at each seat to help guests find their assigned tables.
Despite a visible name card, we were led to the round table which I highly believed was a VIP table.
The table was all starched red linen with goblet glasses, cutleries, and a bottle of champagne.
Marcus in all gentleness, pulled out a chair for me and I lowered my stance and gave him a smile in appreciation.
He sat beside me. Not across, or a seat away like I expected but right beside me.
He is quite intimidating. I can give you that. The strength in his voice matches the hardness of the muscles of his body.
The chiseled features of his face, and his strong masculine scent were all over the place.
I could barely breathe in without him filling every pore of my body.
“Relaxed yet?”
I gave a nod. I was no longer tense because, for some reason, it felt more warm knowing he was there.
“Paul owns the foundation,” I blurted. I failed to use the high intonation so it came out as a sentence rather than a question. “I didn’t know.”
“He doesn’t quite talk much of his success story. He acts like he doesn’t even own half of the world but in the true sense, he is a man with an eye for business and profits. Despite having a good number of companies, he has also founded Foodlog, a company he says is aiming to bring healthy and affordable food to the world through innovative farming techniques.”
“Wow
That was a lot for someone who didn’t act like he could do anything other than sip vodka and tease.
Even though I tried to not eavesdrop, I had to pause for a second to investigate if they were talking about me. That day at the office, with all the whines about me being a novice and all, I didn’t quite take him seriously.
His success story was quite impressive and I was sure as hell captivated but it was because Marcus was taking his time to explain it to me.
It made me feel a sense of belonging. Hearing him craft out sentences not work-related and also not a criticism of my job.
Our little interaction was halted when the MC called for everyone’s attention. My eyes turned to the raised stage with a podium adorned with the emblem of the hosting organization.
“Now, let’s give it up for the man of the moment.”
A round of applause with cheers and matters followed and I joined. I clapped despite knowing the man of the moment was -different from the one everyone was clapping for.
Well, call me crazy but I have never seen a thirty-nine-year-old man look this s***y. Sexier than his son could ever be and not just that than anyone his age could be
He must have noticed an eye on him because he looked at me and I felt a flash of suspicion in his eyes.

“What?” I asked, acting like I wasn’t the one who was staring first
“You’re still clapping he muttered and I looked at my hands.
Oh shit.
