Chapter 18
Melissa
I took a shower. A very long one that had me walking out of the bathroom naked, with a towel I used in drying my hair.
I could barely keep my mind away from the event and what it would have in store for me, Would anything change?
I’ve never been to an event like this and hell- I spent most of my day reading up on what usually happens on occasions like this, fundraising dinners.
Nothing unusual, Opening remarks the foundation’s impact, Guest speakers taking the mic, fundraising appeals, and of course, awards of recognition which I knew Marcus would get.
“F**ck where’s the s**ng cream!!” I yelled and looked around. I needed to appear my best even if he wasn’t going to acknowledge me.
I would probably find someone better after this- getting my revenge on lan. It was all just a game to me and there was no way I could be forgetting that.
All I want is to make him feel so much pain when he finds out I’ve been f***ng his father too. That was a lot to even think of but Marcus-ourgh, Marcus. He was making it difficult to even look reasonable.
I thought while I sh***ed my legs and underarms. I looked at my hair, after giving it a different cut and smiled. I slipped a comb in to keep one side off my face and applied powder.
My phone buzzed on the table and I jumped on one leg to grab the phone.
MARCUS: THE DRIVER IS OUTSIDE
My heart sk***ed when I read the text. It was his driver, hell and I wasn’t supposed to feel tensed up but I still couldn’t help
Nervousness kept me awake for most of the night. It was more of an anticipation than nervousness but the two always worked together for me.
Attending an event with Marcus was going to be quite interesting but I still kept thinking about what he was thinking of me. I have always wanted to have this opportunity.
I quickly swept an eyeliner on my lower lid and tucked some strands of my hair behind my ear to allow me to do the other
eye.
I’ve heard him call me pretty once. It wasn’t even a direct compliment. I heard it from his friend-Paul. It did seem like it was Marcus who called me pretty first but he didn’t repeat the word.
Not even when I spent so much trying to get a mix of classy and s***y, I couldn’t even think of what I could have done wrong because I looked perfect but I ended up getting a strike instead of a compliment.
I scoffed and looked at my reflection in the mirror. The silk dress-I went back for it because a part of me felt like Helena was right about the dress.
Dressed in the mid-length black frock, I styled my hair into an asymmetric bob. I had to cut my hair a little to attain the look I wanted and it wasn’t bad at all.
I walked downstairs, threading carefully to the black Bentley parked across. “There is no need to feel tensed,” I told myself. It would take a few minutes to meet Marcus at the event and I’d have braced up.
“Thanks,” I mumbled when the driver opened the door. I gave a quick smile, slid inside, and f***k-M**s was right there.

Chapter 18
My chest heaved and I gave myself a m***al pep talk. “You can do this, Melissa.”
“Miss Kane.” he said.
Benumbed. I pinched the bridge of my nose and tried to maintain composure. There was nothing more enticing than being this close to Marcus Hills
29%.
He was imperiously dressed in a black collarless button-up shirt and a pristine two-piece black suit. His gold wristwatch screamed wealth not to mention his rings. Everything about him was intimidating and must have slipped because now he was wearing a proud smile like he just succeeded in getting me intimidated.
“You said you’d be sending your driver,” I reminded him. “I-I wasn’t expecting to see you.”
“What changed?” He asked and I raised my brow at him. Everything. Now I can’t adjust my straps because you are here and I can’t even think straight..
Marcus
When Melissa got inside the car, every part of me struggled to look away. Her skin was as beautiful as her legs- oh shit..
I raked his eyes up and down, not even sure where to stop or where to linger because the whole package was a dream Whatever course she was taking on how to look effortlessly good was definitely worth every cent. From an ordinary-looking young girl, she transformed in my very eyes into a high-toned woman
She looked slightly surprised to see me at first but then she swallowed it and acted like nothing was amusing about me being
in the car.
When she managed to say what was on her mind, I scoffed, knowing that she was still nervous.
“You don’t have to feel tensed, or is there something that makes you feel tensed?”
she shook her head. “You don’t have to worry about me, Mr. Hills. I’m not a child and it’s just an event.”
Just an event.
I gave a nod and averted my glance away from her. I heard her heave- her chest rising and falling and f***k, I fought so hard to not look at her.
When our ride ended, I looked at her face and caught her taking a deep breath.
“I told you that you’re nervous.”
“I guess I am.”
“It’s okay, just stay by my side, I told her and opened the door. I climbed out of the car, adjusting my suit jacket just before turning to the other side.
She climbed out too-looking like she was born for the spotlight. I led her back through the red carpet and up the grand stairs to a mezzanine floor.
When I noticed how the was, I held her hands and leaned to her. In a whisper, I said,
This should have been lan, not me.
