Chapter 17
Melissa
He walked away and the rest of the girls looked at me like there was trouble in paradise or was there something I failed to
notice?
“Uh-I’ll be right back,” I muttered to no one in particular and rubbed my hands on my dress. I walked right after him and walked inside his office.
His table was still neatly arranged which meant that he had barely done anything for the day.
“You called me, sir.”
“I did.” he responded not letting a smile or whatever form on his face. “I don’t have to lecture you on what you are meant to do in an office environment, do I?”
I paused to think. Was I supposed to answer that or
“I’m asking you, Miss Kane.”
“No.” my jaw squeezed. “No, sir.”
“Good cause I can’t have you violating the orders that other employees keep with their lives.”
1 frowned. Violate what orders?
“I-I’m sorry but I don’t understand. Did I violate an order?”
“I get it that you’ve never had an experience with a real job and that you may be the youngest employee here, but that doesn’t change anything. You need to understand that your sexual desires and those of your colleagues must be kept outside my company.”
My scowl deepened.
“You don’t share your sexual fantasies or whatever here.”
I interrupted him. “I wasn’t sharing my fantasies.”
“You want to have me, right? Sure as hell sounds like one,” he mimicked. “For the last time, Miss Kane, you cannot have a personal relationship with any of the workers.”
What on earth was he taking me for? A s***t who would be so open to everyone including an average salary earner like Nate? “I am in a relationship with lan,” I reminded him in case he was missing out on that part.
“I am aware of that information, Miss Kane,”
I gave a nod glad that he was. “I do not have anything to do with Nate, Jimmy, or any man in this company. Whatever you were told or you heard was definitely misheard, sir.”
He looked at me and fell to his chair. He sat down so lazily that could see how his chest heaved in such a slow and steady
manner.
I shifted my eyes away from his chest and tried to maintain eye contact but that was equally difficult.
“One strike. Two more and you’re out of here.”

My eyes widened. Was that how he treated the rest of the employees or was there something about being his son’s girlfriend. putting me on a different perspective?
“You can leave.” he said and motioned to the door. I could barely say another word. It was such a blow to my ego that he didn’t even notice me-the dress I spent my entire $27 on and the pumps I was trying so hard to walk with.
I gave a nod
I turned to get away from his office but his voice filled the air and unsure of what he said I turned back. “Did you say something?”
“The event is tomorrow,” he said with a stern voice.
Oh to hell if I refused that opportunity. “I remember,” I responded and left the office.
Andra had gone for her short break by the time I was back and Chloe was just rounding up. Due to the minutes Marcus took from my work time, it meant I had to stay back.
“Hey.” Chloe called and I looked over at her. A beautiful woman possibly in her mid-twenties. I could tell because of how young, jovial, and friendly she was. I once overheard her talking about her fiance and bro, I was shocked to find out she was really engaged.
Even the Nate that I imagined was around my age happened to be four years older— and yes, Marcus was the youngest.
“Everything okay?” Chloe asked as she got ready to go get an ice cream.
sht about being
I could tell she was asking about Marcus and the reason he called me so I just gave a small nod. “Uh-yeah. Just a warning.
sort of.”
“A warning?” she asked like it was a strange word. “Mr. Hills warned you?”
Unsure of what she was thinking, I gave another nod, Actually, Chloe already proved that she was nothing like Andra and that I could share my problems with her.
Not like I was going to consider sharing personal problems but this-about Marcus giving me a strike could be a problem. needed to share.
“Yeah, Mr. Hills gave me a strike.”
Her jaw dropped at that point and I got the confirmation I needed. Marcus never did this with any of the rest employees. So what the hell is the employee rule that I violated?
“That’s new,” she blurted. “Look, I’m not trying to scare you off right now but I think he doesn’t like you working here.”
“Huh?”
“I said that I didn’t want to scare you.”
Holy shit, Chloe. Just shut up and talk. “I’m not scared. I’m just confused. He said it’s because I violated some orders by talking about my fantasies-well, according to him, sexual fantasies with Nate.”
Disbelief clouded her face again. “Did you really do that? Oh my god, Melissa.”
“Of course not,” I frowned. “I didn’t do anything in that manner. It was just a mix-up and he misinterpreted it.”
“He’s probably just trying to get other guys off you. You’re dating his son, remember?” That sounded good enough but it wasn’t convincing. It felt like I still needed to get at something

“Yes, but could there be any other reason?” I asked and rested my jaw on my hands.
A sneer followed. “He probably knows what you are.” It was Andra and she was leaning on a cubicle,
Hell. How did she hear us?

Chloe looked at her and then at me-trying to make me ignore her but I already did that. I just had one question in my head and it was possibly the same one in Marcus’ head.
What am I?
