Chapter 21
Melissa
Watching Marcus take the mic and everyone’s attention was such a great thing.
I have never imagined what being unapologetically alluring could do to a crowd but with Marcus and by standing here, I
know it.
He kept saying each word with confidence and when he mentioned Kyra? My heart skipped.
I know I have no idea who he is or anything about his personal life but a part of me wanted to know who she could be.
Is she his lover? Does he have a lover? Wait, so he’s not celibate too. Why has he not said any about his love life? Is this sort of an open declaration that he’s in love with a woman named Kyra?
On and on, the questions kept piling in my head until I felt a hand on my

shoulder.
“Melissa,” I blurted. I hoped she didn’t think I was the Kyra Marcus was referring to.
“Oh, Melissa! I’m Joliet, a friend of Paul.”

I smiled to that and raised the glass to my lips, I needed to finish this drink and walk back to the table but first I needed this drink to be able to contain what I was feeling.
“That’s great. I’m not really a friend though.”
“That’s right,” a blonde chirped from beside Joliet. “She’s an employee.”
They both have the same body shape, kind of chubby with a nice smaller waist.
I think the word to use is curvy. Both women are curvy and hell, their choice of dress showed they were not just friends but rich friends.
I wouldn’t think otherwise. Paul was a billionaire as well and he was meant to be around people of his type.
I turned in the direction of the blonde who was yet to introduce herself.
“I heard when Mr. Hills said you’re his secretary.”
“That’s right,” I confirmed. “I also love my job.”
Actually, a secretary isn’t a bad position and I wasn’t about to deny that just to fit into whatever class they may be in.
“So how good of a secretary are you?” Joliet asked. “Remember Paul’s statement, hm?”
Of course I remember his statement. For a moment, I thought it was a slip and he was going to mess it up by mentioning my name but he didn’t. He just made the world feel like anyone working for Marcus needed Stamina.
“So how good are you for you to still be standing?”
“Very good.”
That wasn’t me.
We turned in the direction of the voice and it was Marcus walking toward us. He probably looked around trying to find me

or he needed a drink like me and decided to walk to the bar.
“She’s actually very good at her job.”
“Does that mean Paul’s information wasn’t credible?”
+5
“While it may be reasonable to say working for Mr. Hills can be difficult, I can’t say it’s not the best thing I’ve had in a while.”
Joliet smiled at my response but the blonde? Damn it, she wasn’t even listening. It felt like she was waiting for me to shut up so she could speak and the moment I did, she didn’t let me down.
“Mr. Hills,” the blonde smiled. “I can’t believe we get to see again.”
Marcus only smiled in respond and a small nod followed.
“You have no idea how many times I’ve asked Paul to get you to have dinner with us. You know? In an exquisite view that the middle class cannot relate to.”
Whatever she was trying to get was working because I began to feel irritated by her choice of words. I licked my bottom lip and then turned to the bar man to get another flute.
I tried hard to not eavesdrop but because Marcus’ voice was loud enough, it was quite impossible.
“In as much as I appreciate the gesture, you must understand I’m a busy man. Paul and I don’t even get to see ourselves
often.”
She kept whining like a cat in need of attention but Marcus didn’t patronize her, again.
Tho would have made me smile, just like he did with the lady from the boutique but it didn’t.
It felt slightly different and it was because I still had unanswered questions in my head. Was he only occasionally nice to me because I’m his secretary?
I get to spend a lot of time with him due to the nature of my job and I’ve never seen him look at a woman seductively.
Hell, if he wasn’t Ian’s father, I probably would have been one of those presuming his sexuality.
When he walked back to where I stood, I gave a small smile.
“Miss Kane,” he said. “I thought you had left.”
“Wouldn’t that have caused me another strike? You can bet that I’m trying to avoid a second strike.”
“Not really; being that you made the request to be here and you’re not here by obligation.”
“Hmmm,” I hummed. “Congratulations, on your award.”
“Thanks.”
It was so simple and hell, sometimes Marcus’ lack of humility made me sick to my stomach.
“That calls for celebration and why didn’t you accept?”
“Accept what?” He asked looking at me.
“Your friends. They wanted to celebrate with you in an exquisite dinner.”
“Acquaintances,” he corrected. “I’m a very private person, Miss Kane. I go a long way to protect my privacy.”

Chapter 21
“Oh.”
I know that, I just didn’t know that you don’t consider them your friends.
“I thought they’d be your friends since they are Paul’s.”

“Paul and I share a lot but there’s still a line. I mean, there was a lot of disparities between him and his twin brother too.” He trailed off. “Unfortunately, he died.”
“The same one he talked about. I saw hoe hard he tried to make it look like he wasn’t bleeding inside.”
Marcus didn’t respond but I didn’t want the conversation to end either.
“I understand his pain. Fighting grief is like fighting your life.”
He turned to look at me pointedly.
At this point, I knew he would want to ask .e everything about my life and I couldn’t let that happen.
I can’t take down what is left of me.
“Well, I hope he heals and I think I have to go. It’s getting late.”
He gave a nod.
“Thank you for this- the opportunity to be here.”
“Welcome.”
I clutched my purse and turned to leave when I felt his eyes on me and I paused. “Is there something wrong?”
“Did you mean it?”
“Mean what?” I was quite confused at his question.
“You said you enjoy working for me. Did you mean it or you just like the idea of working for me?”
Is there supposed to be a difference with these questions? I’d say both Mr. Hills but because I have no idea what he’s looking
for I shook my head. “I meant that even though you caught me off guard with your presence.”
He gave a nod. “You also caught me off guard. You look incredibly amazing, Miss Kane.”
