Chapter 13
Melissa
Sudden fear coursed through me as the worst-case scenario played in my head.
My breathing pattern increased but a loud blaring sound sent me flinching back to the door.
1 dodged whatever it was and it landed on the floor. I turned just in time to find the pebble on the floor and I looked in the direction of the attacker.
“Who the hell do you think you are? Thief!!!!
“No no,” I blurted and raised my hands to the air. “it’s me, grandma. It’s me, Melissa. Your granddaughter.”
“Hell break loose if I have one. You are just a thief looking to steal my money.”
I swallowed hard trying to take a step forward. The doctors already explained how it works. She’d barely recognize anything. lose memory, and judge on impulse. He also said she’d be aggressive but I’ve never experienced it until now.
“Grandma please calm down it’s Melissa”
“And who the hell is Melissa?” she asked again with a furrow on her forehead. Her close-set eyes arched and she frowned.
Her
grey hair was still mixed with black but it wasn’t properly kept. I felt bad for not even being here to make sure she had a proper upkeep but she was the one who threw me out…
Tears saturated my eyes and I tried my best to blink it back.
She doesn’t leave her bed, she just sits upright and when I walk closer, she also doesn’t react aggressively.
“I don’t have any grandchild,” she said sternly. “I only have a daughter, Whitney and she’s only seventeen. How can she have a daughter as old you as when she’s just a little girl?”
My heart squeezed. Whitney.. That’s my mother’s name. No one else called her by her first name aside from Grandma.
“Mom is dead. She died five years ago.
“Now you see why you should get out of my house.” She paused and turned her face away from me. “Whitney! Whitney darling, there’s a young girl here saying really crazy things and I’m going to wh***op her a***if she keeps saying you’re dead. Come on hunny, hurry up with those pancakes so she can see you.”
I swallowed back the lump in my throat as I watched her talk audibly, almost shouting and referring to no
Does she really not remember her dying? I remember it- like it was yesterday but she doesn’t because dementia happened. A nightmare that caused her to always ask me to leave because she couldn’t live with a stranger who wasn’t her daughter. “But poor you! let me get you some pancakes okay? I know I yell a lot but I just don’t like people saying bad stuff about my Whitney. She leaned closer as if she was about to whisper and she did. “Did you see Mila outside?”
Of course not. Mila was her sister, her elder sister who also died a few years ago. She has a daughter, literally the one survivor from her end.
Makes us two.
She lives far away in Europe. I can’t even remember what she looked like again but now that grandma couldn’t even remember anything, it was worse.

“No.” I blurted. A little comfortable now that she was calmer.

Her room wasn’t messy like every other part of the house. In fact, it looked swept and her bed cover neatly covered the bed.
There was no picture of my mom or me- something I wish wasn’t so. Maybe a steady reminder would have helped but
there was none..
“Mila is just another pain in the a***,” she scoffed. “Hunny, do you know that Mila wants Whitney to get married? I’ll be d****d if I let anyone pressure her that way.”
“Really?” I asked.
“Yes, but I stood up to her. She hates that I did but she’s only a year older than me. We have a love-hate relationship but I love her and I love my Whitney as well”
I don’t remember my grandfather. He died before I was even born and so that was a far-fetched memory. If she couldn’t remember the most recent traumatic event. How then would she remember one that happened over twenty-one years ago?
I sighed.
“I’m sorry I’m taking too long. I can’t seem to find the d***n
pan
I turned to look at her and I felt the sudden urge to tell her she stopped making pancakes a long time ago but
It felt like she was in her own world and I didn’t want to ruin it.
I didn’t
Tell me about Whitney,” I said. “While trying to get the pancakes, of course.”
“A very stubborn girl I must say! I’d ask her to stay home but she’ll insist on going out. She came one day with a little girl,
Mels.
My eyes widened at the sentence. That is me, Mels. That was the name my mom called me and even grandma adapted to it. She was mixing it up… From my mom being a child to her giving birth to me and bringing me to Old Town.
She knows she has a grandchild but she doesn’t remember who or even the sequence. I bite my lower lip, just close enough. to help me take that well.
“Did you say, Melsi”
“Yes, the cutest creature you’ll ever lay your eyes on. Her hair was always messy cause she never listened! I told Whitney to hoop her a** for being naughty but she didn’t listen to me.”
“Where’s Mels now!”
“Making pancakes with Whitney
“No-“I said, swallowing back the lump in my throat. “I’m here
She laughed so loud that I couldn’t even figure out the joke in it
“Girl you should be almost 20! Mels is still a kid. She hasn’t even lost her first teeth.”
“I brought you something.” I said and reached my bag for the envelope.
“I saw Whitney on my way here and she asked me to give you this. She says it’s for your medication. You do take them right?”
Her smile softened and it felt like she was tearing up. “She does so much, hunny. She’s the only reason I still take these medications when I’m not sick.”

Chapter 13
Uct 24
I could tell that her mind was all jumbled up because of the dreadful look in her eyes.
I gave a nod glad that she didn’t reject my gift. I had saved for a long while to be able to give her $500.
I know not enough, not good enough, or whatever but it’s all I’ve got and she’s all I’ve got too.
“Can I hug you?”
She stared at me and I hoped she’d say yes. I was breaking into pieces from just being here and when she gave a nod, I sprawled to my feet.
“Come here, baby.”
It felt so real, so genuine and the moment I got in her arms, a tear ran down my eyes.
I wrapped my hands around her gently, and we stayed there together. She hugged me back, saying no word and just letting me cry into her arms.
When a small sound escaped my lips, she frowned.
“Girl, are you crying on me?” She asked. “You acting like you need your mummy won’t do you any good at this age.”
I shook my head in disapproval and sniffed back. “No, no. I’m sorry, that was just-
“It’s okay but you have to take it all in and act like whatever it is isn’t getting the best of you.”
That was her principle… A doctrine she lived by all her life.
“Because what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, I blurted and she gave a satisfied grin. “You sound like Whitney now.”
I wiped my eyes with a napkin and gave a quick smile. It was like to leave I needed to use the train again and get back
home.
“Can I visit you often?” I asked. “I love your company a lot.”
“I must warn you that I’m not always nice. Hell, you kids don’t understand the need to insulate for a moment and get things
done.
That wasn’t far from what I expected but still-I gave a nod. Take note of that.”
“Does anyone else visit you?”
She pointed to her table. “Someone did a few days ago. I don’t even know who she is or what she calls herself. She just walked in here like she owned the place and I walked her out.”
“You did?”
“Hell yes. Girl needed to get home training. She couldn’t even keep up with a conversation like you are now. She dropped a paper with her number and address I think but I pray the devil doesn’t need it either. Cause I don’t.”
I stood up and reached for the paper. On the paper was a name, number, and an address.
That wasn’t all, she had also written, love you aunt.
It was Mila’s daughter.
When all was done and said, I turned to the doorway and waved at her.
She scrunched her nose. “Remember to take charge of whatever is. Don’t come here crying on me again.”
