Chapter 8
Melissa
Marcus eyes ravaged me the moment I entered the office, and even though I still stumble in heels, the way his eyes go over my body still makes my legs go weak at the thought of what is in his head.
His friend however had other ideas, and I could see him looking from Marcus to me and back to Marcus as if waiting for an explanation for why a short tiny woman was in the doorway, speechless, and looking lost.
“Excuse me, Mr. Hills.”
He kept the same expression he had on when I entered and not even his eyebrows flicked to acknowledge the new person
me, in the room.
His friend had his glass to his lips, still waiting for an explanation that was not forthcoming.
I stared right back at him and Marcus must have thought it wise to say something.
“Melissa, this is Paul. A good friend of mine.” he started. “Paul, meet the secretary, Melissa.”
“You weren’t wrong about anything, my friend,” Paul said “She is not Aphrodite, but she is not far off.
“Oh, come off it, Paul, don’t give the kid ideas. She is peers with Jan.”
My heart stung as they talked about me like I wasn’t standing right in front of them.
1 swallowed hard contemplating what to say. Hello to the man or just stand there and wait for Marcus.
“Yes, It has come to my knowledge that I am behind on n meetings and phone calls. I would like that attended to as soon as possible.”
“Okay, sir. Any specifics?”
“Make it so that all meetings are held here in my office, or anywhere suitable on the complex. And pack them so close together I can finish them in a week or two.”
“Ill take care
se care of that,” I said and left to my desk just outside the office.
I couldn’t help but notice the exchange going on inside the office, and how Paul kept on praising my beauty in high tones, talking about how he sees the reason why Marcus kept me despite my lack of experience
Of course, I want to prove that I am also a valuable asset to Marcus, not just a doll for showing off, and so I get quickly to work.
And boy was it a lot.
There were so many names and so many schedules, and I had to reassign each name to another date and rearrange the schedule as closely packed as possible.
It wasn’t much of a task, except sending out the emails had their specialty, which I am an expert in. It is very different from making phone calls and arranging business meetings, which I have no idea whatsoever how to tackle. And unfortunately, it is the meat of the work on my plate.
The first few minutes went well, the first few minutes being 3 minutes in until I saw a name I had to pronounce on a call, that I had never seen before, and on calling the office of that person, with a pronunciation I had hoped was correct, I was told the person did not work at the office, and was cut off.

“I better ask Mr. Hills,” I muttered under my breath
I had to talk to Marcus about it, and since he was available right now, I thought it was best to ask him.
“Sir. A moment please?”
“Yes. What is it. Melissa?”
“I am having trouble reaching Mr Swain.
Marcus’ look of confusion assured me I had gotten the name wrong Well,
f****k me.
“Swain!”

“S-W-A-I-N. The one from the Albanian contact.”
“Sean.” Marcus corrected “Mr Sean.”
“Oh, that’s how that is pronounced,” I mumbled.
I went back to my desk to continue, and 30 minutes in, making a reservation at the hotel diner seemed to be a bit of a problem, so I thought it was best to go in again and ask Marcus how to go about it.
“The hotel Lux and Gold has a policy that reservations cannot be made a week before.”
“Then find a restaurant closer to the location and make the reservation there.”
I went back to my desk and dug back into work. The emails were easy. Responses from the other secretaries were mostly confirmations and acknowledgments of my emails and nothing at all that needed a back-and-forth.
But the calls didn’t get easier, and soon I h
